One Foggy Morning: Kelly and Josh Engagement

Boulder Red Rocks Engagement Shoot

As I was lying in bed trying to convince myself to get up the morning of this shoot I was thinking through exactly where we’d go for our photos.  Okay, we’ll start with some wide angle shots near the bench at the top of the trail overlooking Boulder.  Then we’ll move to the rocks and we’ll do some shots incorporating the rocks.  And then we’ll move to the grass.  Once I had my basic plan, I was ready to get up.  At which point I got a little surprise.  It was foggy out there.  I wasn’t prepared for fog.  I’ve never shot in fog before.  What did I need to know?  Hopefully nothing I didn’t know already.

Meet Kelly and Josh.  They’re getting married next summer in Tennessee.

I’m really happy with how this shoot turned out.  And because I know the shots are good I’m going to tell you a little bit about how I worked through some of the problems I encountered during the shoot.  Luckily, I had a wonderful couple willing to get into whatever pose I asked and kiss when requested (and not).

What I wanted from this shoot were pictures Kelly and Josh would gush over.  And after that, pictures I could brag about.  Pictures like that don’t just happen.  They take a determination to push beyond the obvious and the boring to the pictures that really start to tell the story.  If you get stuck at the obvious that’s what you’ll come away with.  Pictures you didn’t need to hire a professional photographer for.  Pictures that show the obvious.  But the photos that are interesting are the ones that tell the story.  The ones that show a couple’s quirks.  And ones that could only be taken at the moment in time they were taken.  Sometimes I look at my screen and realize the pictures are just what I’m saying you didn’t hire me for, they’re too obvious and they even bore me on the back of my camera.  But what I did get hired for is to react to that.  To change things up.  To create a new situation which does achieve what I want.  And to have you be none the wiser.  And that is exactly what I did.

Thank you, Kelly and Josh.  For your patience.  For your carefree attitude on-camera.  And for your confidence in me.  And you know what, I knew everything I needed to.
